The amount of octopus caught in Japan has decreased dramatically, and in the famous production area of Akashi, the catch has continued to be poor, falling to about one-fifth of the amount caught 10 years ago.
Japan is one of the world's leading consumers of octopus, but more than half of the annual consumption is met by imports. Octopus has become a popular seafood worldwide, and combined with the poor catch in Japan, the retail price has soared to about double the price of 10 years ago.
